Re: Application for ER Nurse — New Graduate Practical Nursing Position

Dear Hiring Manager,

As a graduating Practical Nursing student from Fleming College in Peterborough, ON, I am seeking a position with your nursing team where I can apply my clinical experiences and commitment to patient-centered care.

My rotations were completed at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Cardiac Unit, Medicine Unit, and Extendicare Cobourg, which included face-to-face experience in head-to-toe assessments, medication administration, wound care, telemetry monitoring, patient education, and under the supervision of an RN and in keeping with the CNO standards.

I come with a solid professional background in addition to clinical training. For 5 years, I was a Nursing Coordinator for Paramed and gained knowledge in care coordination and Management of Electronic Health Records (Procura). Working as a Resident Care Aide at Bayshore, I have a renewed respect and feeling of compassion for my difficult clients on a daily basis.

I have completed the Brunel University London Master’s degree in Public Health through a course that has included an evidence-based approach that has underpinned my practice and an equity-informed approach, through the Humber College Honours BHSc. I will care for all my patients safely, attentively, and competently.

I would like to provide some background information about myself and how I fit into what your organization is looking for. Looking forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Uzezi Eta

SMART Goals

Two goals — one short-term, one long-term — that anchor my transition into practice. Each is tied to specific CNO Practice Standards and supported by a concrete activity plan.

Short-Term Goal

I will pass the HESI Exit Exam with a clinical knowledge and competency score of 900 or higher within the next 10 weeks, to meet the clinical requirements for safe entry-to-practice as an RPN in Ontario.

CNO Practice Standards this Goal Aligns With

Code of Conduct — Principle 3: Providing Safe and Competent Care (CNO, 2026).

It is the responsibility of nurses to have the knowledge and skills to practice safely. The HESI Exit Exam provides a guarantee of knowledge, confidence, and competence to enter the profession and, most importantly, keep the client safe, not just for passing, but for preparation.

Accountability Standard (CNO, 2023).

These standards place a responsibility on the nurses to develop and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary for safe practice, such as entry-to-practice academic standards. Personal ownership of professional readiness through self-directed study, peer collaboration, and official practice testing.

Long-Term Goal · Developing Competency in Mental Health Nursing

I will gain a basic level of knowledge and competency in mental health nursing within 12 months by completing the RPN program by using the accredited e-learning modules, attending CNO/RNAO-approved webinars, and completing 6 reflective journal entries in my e-portfolio documenting my growth.

CNO Practice Standards this Goal Aligns With

Continuing Competency Standard (CNO, 2023).

The goal of this standard is to ensure that RPNs undertake lifelong learning to maintain and continually enhance their knowledge and skills in nursing. Structured reflection over the course of the year, along with completion of the BPG modules and accreditation of webinars, meets the requirement for ongoing, self-directed continuing competency, especially in a specialized field of interest that is in increasing demand in Ontario.

Professional Responsibility and Accountability Standard (CNO, 2023).

The standard requires that nurses work in an evidence-based and client-centered way. This goal reflects a commitment to accountability, meeting the needs of the individual client and their family, and delivering care based on current evidence that is guided by the RNAO best-practice guidelines and CNO-approved resources.
